Camp Quest Texas 2018

Camp Quest Texas | Posted on 2018-01-10

Preparations for Camp Quest Texas 2018 are progressing well and there will be a flurry of activity very soon. Below are some highlights and answers to some common questions.

– Camp will be held at the same location as last year, YMCA Camp Ray Bean at Possum Kingdom Lake.
– The dates for camp are June 17-23.
– Registration for campers will begin early February.
– Pricing for camp will be released as soon as it is finalized by the Board of Directors.
– The Board is working hard to offer the best camping experience at a reasonable cost. As with previous years, an initial deposit will be required at registration. A limited amount of financial assistance is available and applications will be available at registration.
– Volunteers are vital to the success of camp. We will be making a push to gather more volunteers and will be reaching out to those who have expressed an interest. Volunteers will be able to register at the same time as campers once registration opens.
– Anyone associated with CQTX can request to join our Facebook group ‘CQTX Participants’ where general information regarding camp can be discussed.
– More details to follow!

2017 Camp Announcement

There have been some exciting new developments at Camp Quest Texas!

  • We’ve been able to get earlier dates for next year’s summer camp: June 18 – 24, 2017
  • Our volunteers plan to have our registration system ready early next year — we’ll let you know when we have a firm date
  • We were able to get a different, larger campground: YMCA Camp Ray Bean at Possum Kingdom Lake west of Ft. Worth

Camp Ray Bean is next door to YMCA Camp Grady Spruce, the site of a couple of our earlier camps, and it’s part of the Grady Spruce family of camps.

This campground has 14 cabins in 7 buildings, and lots of indoor and outdoor space for activities.

This is the Dining Hall. All food is prepared on site, and there will be plenty of options for those with allergies and other dietary needs. This room is also an Activity Center.

Below is the Retreat Center where our volunteer staff will sleep, except for a few Cabin Counselors who stay with the campers in the cabins. If you’d like to be one of those volunteers and work with some of the most awesome kids you’ve ever met, please click on the “Join Our Team” button at the end.

There are two cabins per building with a couple of bunks and storage space upstairs. Each building has a kitchenette.

The campground includes a large multi-purpose athletic field and a crafts shed with a kiln and throwing wheel. Our water activities will include swimming, a blob, and possibly even boat rides to the nearby island for nature studies.

This is another one of the Activity Centers.

We are a 100% volunteer organization. You do not have to attend camp in order to help. We have tasks that can done on your computer from your own home starting right now. If you would like to help us conduct the most awesome camp yet, and you have not already done so, please click here and indicate your interests.

It’s been 2 months since Camp Quest Texas and we are still hearing great stories from the campers, staff and parents. I am so proud to be a part of an organization that does so much to ensure a quality camp experience for tomorrow’s freethinkers. Thanks is just not a big enough word to express my gratitude to the volunteers who put on Camp Quest Texas with such vigor and zeal.

Here is a short video that captures the true spirit of Camp Quest Texas 2016. You might see a kid or two that you recognize!

2016 Campership Sponsors

Camp Quest Texas | Posted on 2016-05-02

We always have a tremendous financial need here at Camp Quest Texas, to meet the needs of families who have significant financial disadvantages. Without sponsored camperships, these families would not otherwise be able to send their kids to camp.

For 2016, we would like to recognize the following organizations who have sponsored camperships:

FactFish1 ACAOfficialLogo
Freethinkers Association of Central Texas:

4 Camperships

Atheist Community of Austin

4 Camperships

Fellowship of Freethought Dallas:

Camp Quest Texas works hard throughout the year to make their Summer Camp a fun and educational experience, allowing campers to grow. They host philosophy discussions (like Socrates Café) where they encourage campers to continuously ask while formulating their own opinions. It’s a Summer Camp that teaches campers how to think, not what to think.

Counselors and other volunteers work hands-on with campers in conducting science experiments, fostering language development, and cultivating a zeal for natural discovery. By encouraging campers to examine and question the natural world around them, they aim to build upon their knowledge and equip them with critical thinking skills that will be applicable long after camp ends.

Of course, the primary goal of Camp Quest Texas is to provide campers with a haven away from home where they can find new and old friends. They also make fun a high priority, with swimming, hiking, races, and games all being part of the Summer Camp experience.

While Camp Quest Texas prepares for this year’s Summer Camp, they are also receiving many pleas for financial assistance from deserving families. Many come from families who live in remote rural communities, where the only contact with other freethinking kids would come from their Summer Camp. Although they try to accomodate as many requests as possible, the need is too great, and their funding is limited.

This is where you come in. By donating on my behalf to Camp Quest Texas, you will help provide an opportunity for a camper to experience a week without fear of religious judgment, without the social isolation, and without the stigma of being a nonbeliever in the Bible Belt. As one mother put it, when she came to Camp Quest Texas, “my daughter felt like she could breathe for the first time.”

Thanks for your support!
